When Low Energy Isn’t a Willpower Problem

Low energy doesn’t always show up as “I didn’t sleep enough.”

Sometimes it looks like standing in the kitchen, staring at the fridge, and realizing that nothing sounds good.
Sometimes it’s forgetting to eat — not because you’re trying to restrict, but because your hunger cues just… went quiet.
Sometimes it’s doing “all the right things” and still feeling wiped out.

When Appetite and Energy Disconnect

I see this a lot with neurodivergent clients — and I experience it myself.

Right now, spaghetti is my safe food.
Homemade sauce. Freshly grated parmesan. Absolute chef’s kiss. 🍝
When that’s hitting? I eat consistently and feel nourished.

But when safe foods stop sounding good and nothing else replaces them, appetite can disappear entirely. Not because the body doesn’t need fuel — but because decision fatigue, sensory overwhelm, or stress has taken the wheel.

This isn’t a discipline issue.
It’s a nervous system and support issue.

Low Energy Is Often a Signal, Not a Failure

In a wellness world that loves quick answers, low energy gets oversimplified:

  • “Just eat more protein”

  • “Push yourself to move”

  • “Try this supplement”

Sometimes those things help — but often they miss the bigger picture.

In my work, low energy is usually connected to under-support, not lack of effort.

Here are a few foundational supports I focus on with clients when energy feels hard.

1. Gentle Nourishment When Hunger Cues Go Quiet

Loss of appetite is common during stress, burnout, or shifts in routine and hyperfixation.

Instead of forcing meals or shaming yourself, we look for:

  • Familiar, low-effort foods

  • Repetition without judgment

  • Consistency over variety until appetite returns

Nourishment doesn’t have to be perfect to be supportive.

2. Movement That Regulates, Not Depletes

When energy is low, pushing harder often backfires.

Gentle movement — walking, stretching, short strength sessions — supports circulation and regulation without telling the body it needs to survive another threat.

Movement isn’t about earning rest or food.
It’s about helping the body feel safe enough to recover.

3. Nervous System Support Comes First

If your system is stuck in survival mode, energy won’t come back just because you “try harder.”

Regulation creates the conditions for:

  • Appetite to return

  • Sleep to deepen

  • Energy to stabilize

This is why I always start with nervous system awareness before layering in habits or structure.
